Sharing the Local Bounty
One of our favorite things we do is team up with our customers to collectively give extra eggs, produce and meats to fellow community members, primarily through New Orleans Community Fridges, as well as other organizations such as Grace at the Greenlight and Second Harvest Food Bank.
What began in the spring of 2022 as a way to offer surplus eggs in peak season to community members in need, turned into a year round program driven by our customers’ generosity and desire to give week in and week out.
How It Works
At the top of our online storefront, there are always $5 donation share items you can add to your shopping cart, often including eggs, produce and meats (based on availability).
Each egg share buys a dozen eggs for us to distribute and with meat and produce, we pool the donations and distribute items we have most of or offer a particularly good value.
Most often we deliver to a New Orleans Community Fridge nearby other delivery locations, but we also have donated larger quantities of eggs to Second Harvest Food Bank and Grace at the Greenlight to distribute through their networks and/or use in the their kitchens.
About NOCF
New Orleans Community Fridges (NOCF) is a mutual aid effort through the city that empowers our neighbors to support each other through free food. The effort gives everyone has the opportunity to provide and to receive collective care. There are 15+ fridges across NOLA as well as in Old Metairie and Westwego.
The fridges are kept up for the community and by the community. NOCF is a large network consisting of donors, hosts, volunteers, artists, engineers, builders and more. It is a collective effort to ensure a safe, clean, and sustainable resource of dried, refrigerated and frozen foods, all free. People donate ingredients as well as prepared meals, sandwiches and more. Anyone in need of food for any reason may use the fridges and pantries at any time of day. And anyone can give, too!
We are proud to contribute to such a commendable cause. Through our business model, we strive to provide a plentiful, local, healthy supply of food to our customers. With our customers’ donations to NOCF, we are able to share the bounty of local food a little further!
